MIPS Tobacco Measure Excluded for PTs

No more tobacco...

When the 2020 Physician Fee Schedule was released this year, it indicated that new measures (Tobacco, Depression, Elder Maltreatment, and Dementia) were being added to the Physical Therapy / Occupational Therapy specialty set. While these measures were always available for OTs, it was assumed by many that this meant these measures would also become available for PTs as well.

However, earlier this week, QPP disclosed their updated measures specification document that brought to light a surprising change to this assumption. The PT Evaluation CPT codes were added to all of the mentioned measures except for Tobacco. While there is no explicit reason given for this exclusion, it means that PTs will not be able to submit on the Tobacco measure for 2020.

As a result, we have decided to remove the measure entirely from our v16 update releasing at the end of the year. If you have any questions or concerns on this matter, please feel free to contact our support department directly.
